Notes:

The drivers' meeting was held at 9am, in the A&W parking lot. The teams were called out and asked to get into their groups, rules were set, and the teams were off and running….sort of.

It was exactly how I pictured it, when we first started planning a few months before: absolute MAYHEM. Four of the teams headed off for the trails right away, and two of the teams were stuck on their first clues already. One of the teams (team A as it were) that had headed out had lost a teammate in the first 2 Km's.

Lori, Cara, Gina, Ian and I sat down to a nice, peaceful, breakfast. As we finished up, we decided to head out to the hills to watch some of the event. The teams were in disarray. Team E, The Smooth Criminals, were not having much luck with their first clue. Shane Hofer was trying to get a hint out of us, insisting that our clue was not making sense, but we wouldn't give in. With a few more words of encouragement, they were off in the right direction.

As they were leaving, Jim Sprang, Rod, and Christina of team C (Miner 49'ers) came down Boneyard Main; they had figured out their next clue! However, they neglected to tell the rest of their team mates, who were still back along the road somewhere. They had to head back the way they came from, in search of their comrades.

Those of us at base camp had lost radio contact with a couple of teams, so my brother and I accompanied by RyJ and Dave P (Team Jeep-photographers) headed off in search of those teams along Boneyard Main. We finally came across Bill and Rob D's team (Team Jackass) who were headed in the right direction for their next checkpoint. Bill told me how Jay K and Rob B's (Captain Highliners) team were way lost on their next clue: referencing the creek crossing at the base of Escalator. We met up with them at the entrance to Pig Pen's Revenge, where a few helpful hints were given to get them headed in the right direction. We followed suit so that Dave P and RyJ could get some shots of the team in action.

We continued back towards RIP. The CH's headed off for their next site: Tugwell. Team Jeep, Ian and I stopped momentarily at Pig Pen's to play in the trench. A few moments later, Cara and Vern come into the pit at Pig Pen's for some play time.
We then returned to base, where we learned that Jo and Andy's team (Dazed and Confused) were still out on their last run…everyone else had returned to town for Part 2. We headed out towards Tugwell, when we finally caught hold of them on radio. They were doing Can Opener.

We walked up to the main obstacle from Butler. Most vehicles made for the far left line coming down, save for one: Andy, who made the rocks look like a curb, driving right down the center.

At this point we all headed back for town. Most of the teams were frantically scrambling all over the S.W. side of the Island, trying to rack up as many points as possible by getting pictures of various landmarks in the Western Communities.

The day was to end with a 5pm meet time at the restaurant, where we would eat and be merry until the pictures were developed from the disposable cameras. The general census of the participants at the restaurant was one of success. The event went over quite well.
